“The survey revealed that most participants joined through friends, family, or church, and the Band of
Hope played a significant role in their lives. Some joined local Band of Hope groups while others went
on holidays organised by the Youth Temperance Council (umbrella body organising temperance
camps for young people).

Participants credited the Band of Hope for shaping their attitudes towards alcohol and smoking. They
valued the education, fun and friendships they gained, with some growing in their faith and leadership
skills.

The impact of their involvement in the Band of Hope is demonstrated by our findings that only 11%
currently drink alcohol (compared to 82.5% of the general population), and none smoke or use illegal
drugs. Those who do drink alcohol stay within government guidelines.”
